What is decentralized internet and the Graph’s TestNet?

The decentralized internet concept might be quite difficult for some people. Let’s try to take a closer look at it and talk about The Graph’s new TestNet.

Graph launches a hosted service from January 2019, processing requests for dApps on Ethereum and IPFS, such as Synthetix, Uniswap, Aave, Gnosis, Aragon, and others. With more than 1,700 extended subgraphs, the graph has become the main primitive for decentralized application development.

The team behind Graph has been working with blockchain developers for the past two and a half years to improve subgraph functionality, strengthen the graph node, scale hosted services, and design and build the next big step for the Protocol — a decentralized network. The network is now ready to battle real demand and is decentralized, inviting community indexers to the graph’s flight control room.

What is a decentralized network?

Every day, several large corporations are increasingly taking control of the Internet and user data. To fix this, a new concept of network decentralization is called for, which has found supporters among the creators of the Internet itself.

The concept of a decentralized Internet envisions a future in which services such as communications, Finance, publishing, social media, search, archiving, and so on Will be provided not by centralized platforms controlled by an organization, but by people, i.e. a community of users.

The decentralized Internet clearly benefits from the traditional approach in three main areas: privacy, data portability, and security.

  • Privacy. Decentralization places more emphasis on the integrity of personal data. Data is distributed throughout the network, and endpoint encryption technologies are used to restrict access. Data access is controlled exclusively by a network algorithm, unlike more centralized networks where the owner usually has access to all data and can influence customer profiles and ad targeting.
  • Data transfer capability. In a decentralized system, users remain the owners of their data and can decide who to share it with. In addition, users retain control over data when switching from one service provider to another (if the service has a provider concept at all). This is a very important point. If I decide to change my General Motors car to a BMW today, I will still have my driver’s license. The same applies to communication history and medical records.
  • Security. We live in a world where the number of threats to our security is growing. In a centralized system, the more valuable information is, the more attractive it is to fraudsters and criminals. The nature of decentralized platforms makes them more resistant to hacking, intrusion, theft, and other threats, since they are initially designed to operate under public control.

Just as the very advent of the Internet led to huge changes in its time when separate local networks were combined into a single neutral network, the technology now provides a new common platform for higher-level services. And, as with the arrival of the Web 2.0 era, the first signs of the Web 3.0 era have been visible for several years.

Testnet from the Graph

The test network will run in five stages, and each stage will have specific goals and objectives in which indexers will compete for points. The mission management leaderboard will measure the performance of indexers based on their overall scores, which are derived from a combination of technical metrics such as response time and profit maximization, as well as quality factors such as communication, collaboration, and feedback.

Indexers who participate in missions, perform well, participate in training in the test network, and follow all the rules will be eligible for the Graph Token Award. Visit the test network website to learn more about flight rules and incentives to participate.

About the Graph

The Graph is an indexing Protocol for organizing and efficiently accessing data from blockchains and storage networks. The Graph now supports indexing data from Ethereum, IPFS, and POA, and new networks are coming soon. To date, more than 1,700 subgraphs have been deployed for applications such as Uniswap, Synthetix, Aragon, Gnosis, Balancer, Livepeer, DAOstack, AAVE, and Decentraland.
